Kitchen Reno

January 2009

A kitchen in need of renovation

Nobody who has seen our old kitchen would argue that it looked or worked well. It was sorely in need of a rebuild. This winter the work was finally done. Everything had to be stripped out which meant a major cleaning and sorting of stuff! I had been struggling over paint colours for months - trying bits of colour here and there, hating them all.

Livingroom view through window and door

Oddly enough the kitchen reno started in the diningroom, where the old door and window changed size, and position. This was our first hint that the budget was about to be blown.

The new door and window were dramatic enough that the red paint had to go - this room calls for more calm. The remodeled walls have been repainted in a creamy yellow, but the rest of the red remains until spring, when we can air out the house as we paint.

a view of a kitchen peninsula

A peninsula replaces the kitchen/dining room wall. New cupboards, counter, and lighting ensued. We breakfast here now, and I bake here while watching TV.

The new kitchen gives me a little baking area where I can work and be out of the way of John (who is in charge of vegetables, and the practicalities of day-to-day meals.)The mixer is always out so I don't have to hoist it out of cupboards. The smaller microwave is off the counter.

a bare wall in a kitchen

The economic crash meant that one wall (the back wall with the microwave cart in this pre- renovation view) had to be removed from the remodel plan and has been largely untouched. We will try out the kitchen for a year and decide what to do with it then.

kitchen wall with wooden server

This wall was supposed to house more cupboards for storage. For now it holds two wooden pieces of furniture that were used as a buffet and server in the previous dining and kitchen areas respectively, and lots of beans.

The first batch of baking in the new kitchen was this circle of almond apricot buns. Yum!!!

Next plan to prop up the Canadian economy - repairing the deck.
